A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
